In Meeting, A Chance for A Regional Approach

Today, President Barack Obama meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after weeks of speculation about how the two countries will address the threat of Iran potentially obtaining nuclear weapons, and with little expectation for progress on Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.  However, the Iranian threat – coupled with the historic changes of governments across the Middle East – could actually serve as a strategic opportunity for these leaders to address Iran while advancing regional democratic efforts alongside Israeli-Palestinian peace.

A peace deal within two years?

According to Ha'aretz, President Obama plans to announce the renewal of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority at a summit meeting later this month with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Mahmoud Abbas during the UN General Assembly.

As published in IPF Focus last week, Obama is expected to allot 2 years for a completion of talks on an agreement.

Israeli President Shimon Peres told Fox News in an interview Monday night that plans are under way for Abbas and Netanyahu to meet at the end of the month.

"Yes, I think they will meet by the end of September. President Obama will chair it, and I think that at least there is a chance that they will decide they are going to reopen negotiations," Peres said. "But that will not include Hamas."
