IPF Letter in The New York Times

It is sobering yet productive that three distinguished Israelis are generating ideas despite the unfortunate but realistic conclusion that “a comprehensive peace agreement is unattainable right now.”

In Meeting, A Chance for A Regional Approach

Today, President Barack Obama meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after weeks of speculation about how the two countries will address the threat of Iran potentially obtaining nuclear weapons, and with little expectation for progress on Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.  However, the Iranian threat – coupled with the historic changes of governments across the Middle East – could actually serve as a strategic opportunity for these leaders to address Iran while advancing regional democratic efforts alongside Israeli-Palestinian peace.

The Right Balance on Iran

Israel Policy Forum applauds President Barack Obama’s commitment to Israel’s security outlined in his address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

Q: Why is this Passover Different from all Others? A: Obama

Passover is my favorite Jewish holiday for multiple reasons - the significance and symbolism of the holiday itself, the opportunity to spend quality time with our families - especially our children, and the multi-generational links through shared memories and recipes. The story of the Exodus from Egypt tells of a momentous journey from slavery to freedom. This story speaks to all people, Jewish and non-Jewish alike - the escape from bondage to freedom, the miracle of the parting of the Red Sea and the 40 years wandering in the desert in search of a homeland. In the coming days, as we reflect on what these lessons, stories and legends mean, we must remember our responsibilities.

In the context of the Obama Presidency, Passover has special significance. For those of us who care about the two-state solution and peace in the Middle East, we are encouraged and have many reasons to look forward with renewed optimism and hope. As the Egyptians once stood opposed to the Israelites, they now stand, in many ways, side-by-side. This was accomplished a little more than 30 years ago under the aegis of US mediation. We are obligated to continue along this track. The Obama administration is dedicated to bringing about a two-state solution, two homelands for two peoples. Nothing can replace intelligent and thoughtful US leadership, which we need to support and encourage, as it grapples with regional issues and works towards bringing all the involved parties to the negotiating table.

To support this critical role, IPF is committed to developing creative policy ideas, advocacy initiatives, news analysis and commentary that highlight the need for U.S. leadership in order to achieve a two-state solution.

Over the coming days, as my colleagues and I gather with friends and family, there will be less activity than usual on The Mideast Peace Pulse. While not away entirely over the coming week and a half, you can look forward to us returning fulltime on April 20th.

Finally, please remember not to pass-over IPF. If you are so inclined, please make a contribution today, to support IPF and the important work that we do.

Thank you!

The Real Obama

from Haaretz-

Around the time that President Barack Obama hosted the first-ever Passover seder at the White House on Thursday, his administration announced that it had signed a waiver allowing the Palestine Liberation Organization to maintain its office in Washington, the Web site Politico.com reported.

The presidential waiver allows for the PLO to operate its mission despite anti-terrorism legislation passed in 1987 restricting the organization's activities.

The waiver has been renewed every six months since President Bill Clinton first authorized it in 1994.
"I hereby determine and certify that it is important to the national security interests of the United States to waive" the restriction, President Obama wrote on Thursday to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
