In Meeting, A Chance for A Regional Approach

Today, President Barack Obama meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after weeks of speculation about how the two countries will address the threat of Iran potentially obtaining nuclear weapons, and with little expectation for progress on Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.  However, the Iranian threat – coupled with the historic changes of governments across the Middle East – could actually serve as a strategic opportunity for these leaders to address Iran while advancing regional democratic efforts alongside Israeli-Palestinian peace.

It becomes more clear every day that the Gaza war was a disaster for Israel.  Obviously, it was a humanitarian disaster.

But, beyond that, it failed at its key objective.  Hamas was not destroyed.  In fact, it has gained international acceptance since the war.

And now top American foreign policy types are weighing in.  They are telling President Obama in a letter, and soon in a meeting, that it is time to abandon the previous administration's failed policies.

Roger Cohen, the New York Times columnist, who is doing the best writing these days about the Middle East tells all about it here.  It's changing.  And the new government in Israel will have no choice but to go along.
