Israel Policy Forum Announces its Next Chapter with Middle East Progress

Dear Friends and Supporters of Israel Policy Forum:

On behalf of Israel Policy Forum (IPF), including our President Peter Joseph and Chair Larry Zicklin, I am pleased to inform you that IPF is embarking on its next chapter.

2010 Must Be Showtime for Mideast Peace

Assistant Director, IPF - NY

As 2009 draws to a close, we are bombarded by the annual litany of commentary features recapping the year in Hollywood movies to the year in international conflict, and everything in between.

When it comes to the Middle East peace process, current conventional wisdom suggests the 2009 recap might go something like this:

US-Iran Negotiations: Simulation Exercise at INSS

Ephraim Asculai, Emily B. Landau, and Tamar Malz-Ginzburg

INSS Insight No. 154, December 29, 2009

Despite the tendency to denote any simulation exercise on security issues a "war game," the recent simulation designed and held at INSS did not focus on the option of a military attack. Rather, it developed the scenario of a bilateral US-Iranian negotiation over Iran's nuclear program.

West Bank Terror Attack

In the West Bank settlement, Bat Ayin, yesterday a Palestinian man attacked two children with an axe, killing a 13 year-old and injuring a seven year-old.

He then fled the scene and has not been apprehended.

Roi Sharon and Amir Buhbut described the attack in Ma'ariv:

The terrorist was able to surprise the children who were then playing in the settlement's center. He arrived suddenly and struck them with an axe. Shlomo Nativ (13) sustained a critical blow to the neck. [...] he was able to make it home bleeding. There he collapsed and died. Yair (7) sustained a blow to the head.

After this the terrorist ran into Avinoam Maimon, a resident of the
community. [...] "I turned towards the terrorist and then he jumped me. I
didn't get that he was a terrorist until he swung the axe. Then I
realized this was a life threatening situation. He tried to strike me,
but I caught his arm and we struggled for a few moments. At a certain
point I brought him to the ground and was able to get the axe out of his
hand. I prayed to god and cried out for people to call for help.

The terrorist escaped Maimon, who then began attending the injured
Yair. He then realized that Shlomo had sustained greater injuries and
attended him until the medical team arrived. But by the time this
happened, it was too late. After a few minutes of resuscitation, he was
declared dead.

Roi Sharon in Ma'ariv:

The settlement of Bat Ayin was established in 1989 and today numbers about 140 families. More than 90% of the residents are newly religious, and are affiliated with the Chabad and Breslau streams.

The settlement is in the western Etzion Bloc, near Kibbutz Kfar
Etzion, and surrounded by Palestinian villages. Like many settlements in
Judea and Samaria, Bat Ayin has no fence around it because of a decision
in principle made by the residents.

There are many springs around the settlement that the residents use
for ritual cleansing to purify themselves, and the residents are
scrupulous about modesty and a simple life style. The residents don't
have televisions and also avoid goods made in Germany. Moreover, they
are careful only to have Jewish labor and Palestinian workers are not
permitted to enter.

In 2002 a group called the "Bat Ayin underground" was revealed after
two residents were arrested, Yarden Morag and Shlomi Dvir, when they
placed a bomb near a girls' school in East Jerusalem. A third resident,
Ofer Gamliel, was arrested three days later. The three were convicted
and sentenced to 12 and 15 years in prison. However, in recent years
the settlement members have been careful not to break the law for
ideological reasons, after a long period of being considered extremists.

The child had it coming?

Are you really implying that the little child, murder by a Jihadi with an Axe, had it coming because of the sins of people from the same town in 2002?
