IPF comments on meeting between Presidents Abbas and Obama
Israel Policy Forum welcomes President Obama's declaration during his meeting with Palestinian Authority President Abbas that "time is of the essence" in reaching an agreement between Israelis and Palestinians.
IPF agrees completely with President Obama that "we can't continue with the drift" that has characterized Israeli-Palestinian talks, as well as American relations to those talks, for nearly a decade. This leads to "hopelessness," as the President said, on both sides. In addition, maintaining the status quo with Israel continuing its occupation of the West Bank will lead to Israel's rule over an Arab majority, a situation that will mean the end of Israel as a Jewish state or as a democracy.
IPF also welcomes President Obama's reiteration of his call for a halt to Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including "natural growth," and his emphasizing the importance of the Palestinians' "reducing the incitement and anti-Israel sentiments that are sometimes expressed in schools and mosques and in the public square, because all those things are impediments to peace."
President Obama's remarks during his recent meetings with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders demonstrate yet again the Obama administration's commitment to reaching agreements between Israel and its neighbors and the President's determination to lead this effort and remain engaged in it. These agreements cannot be realized without American presidential leadership, which IPF supports and applauds.
