IPF Letter in The New York Times

It is sobering yet productive that three distinguished Israelis are generating ideas despite the unfortunate but realistic conclusion that “a comprehensive peace agreement is unattainable right now.”

In Meeting, A Chance for A Regional Approach

Today, President Barack Obama meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after weeks of speculation about how the two countries will address the threat of Iran potentially obtaining nuclear weapons, and with little expectation for progress on Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.  However, the Iranian threat – coupled with the historic changes of governments across the Middle East – could actually serve as a strategic opportunity for these leaders to address Iran while advancing regional democratic efforts alongside Israeli-Palestinian peace.

The Right Balance on Iran

Israel Policy Forum applauds President Barack Obama’s commitment to Israel’s security outlined in his address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

An Israeli View: Obama’s learning curve

US President Barack Obama continued his crash course on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict last week. He held an oval office meeting with Palestinian Authority President and PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas, while his conflict team, led by George Mitchell, met in London with a high-level Israeli team to discuss settlements and outposts. As Obama internalizes the lessons of these meetings and heads for Riyadh and Cairo this week, the prospects are perhaps not as good as he may have hoped. The reasons, not surprisingly, have to do with domestic politics and poor leadership.

Special Envoy Mitchell Makes a Deal with Israelis in London

Itamar Eichner in Yediot Acharonoth:

Israel is formulating a political package deal with the American administration - this appears to be the state of affairs in the wake of talks between Minister Dan Meridor, attorney Yitzhak Molcho, Uzi Arad and Mike Herzog with special envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell in London.

According to the emerging deal, Israel will acquiesce to President Obama's request and evacuate a significant number of illegal outposts.

Two Settlement Outposts Removed Today

Israeli police have removed two additional West Bank settlement outposts.

Israel Radio News reports:

Border Police and police forces evacuated two illegal settlement outposts in Kiryat Arba.  One of them, the Federman farm, was already evacuated in the past, but the members of the Federman family rebuilt it.  The other outpost, Hill 18, was established by yeshiva students from Kiryat Arba.

The Battle Over Settlement Outposts

Israel Radio News reports that, "the Defense Ministry is formulating a plan for evacuating illegal outposts in advance of Minister Barak's departure for Washington next week."

Israel Radio News:

Israeli Authorities Demolish an Outpost, Israeli Settlers Rebuild It

Israel demolished a settlement outpost in the West Bank yesterday. But by yesterday afternoon the settlers are already rebuilding illegally.

Yedioth Ahronoth:

A few hours after the evacuation, National Union MK Michael Ben-Ari was already affixing a mezuzah to the door of a wooden building that the settlers placed at the spot which had just been demolished.
